This song was composed by that amazing Frenchman, Charles Aznavour in 1973. It's proper title is "Les Plaisirs Demodes". It became a hit in the Netherlands, Belgium and Britain where it topped the charts for 15 weeks. It has been recorded by many others including Fred Astaire, the Mantovanni Orchestra, Petula Clarke and Helen Reddy. It was also featured in the Nicole Kidman film "Eyes Wide Shut" in 1999.
Shahnour Vaghenag Aznavourian, better known by his stage name, Charles Aznavour, is a French Armenian singer, actor, songwriter, public activist and diplomat. Not just France's most enduring and loved singer he is probably the most identified singer in the world. In 1998 he was named "Entertainer of the Century" by CNN when he received 18% of the total vote and edged out both Elvis Presley and Bob Dylan. Currently Armenia's Ambassador to Switzerland and its permanent delegate to the United Nations, Aznavour has appeared in over 60 movies, composed more than a 1000 songs, not only in French, but in English, German, and Spanish too. He has performed for Presidents, Popes and European Royal families as well as for many humanitarian events. He is the founder and sponser of "Aznavour for Armenia" along with his lifetime friend, the Impresario, Levon Sayan.
His song "Dance the Old Fashioned Way" is one of my favorite ballads of the 20th century!
I do hope you like it too.
